Collection Historical Note

Smith Academy (1856-1917) provided primary and secondary education for boys, in effect serving as a preparatory school for Washington University. Instituted to provide qualified college students when public education was unable to do so, Smith Academy was closed in 1917.  Name changes were as follows: 1856-1864(?), The Academic Department of Washington University; 1864(?)-1879, the Academy; 1879-1915, Smith Academy; 1915-1917, Smith Academy-The Manual Training School.  In the first fifteen years of its existence, Smith Academy and the Collegiate Department were almost inseparable.  Smith Academy was not divided into Departments, but rather into Preparatory (lower) and Academic (higher) divisions.  Its primary officers were the Principal and the Vice Principal.  The grade book contains students’ overall grades for their courses.
