Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Guy Patterson Chapman Papers consists chiefly of letters from C.K. Scott Moncrieff to Guy Patterson Chapman, 1923-25 and 1929, 19 autograph letters signed, 31 typed letters signed, 3 autograph postcards, 1 typed postcard and 2 typed letters signed [carbon] from Chapman and 2 letters from Lloyd's Bank. Many letters deal with Moncrieff's translation of The Letters of Abelard and Heloise for Chapman. Moncrieff discusses the difficulties of translation, of finding the books he needs, and of finding time for work between periods of ill health. In addition to the Letters, Moncrieff writes of his work on Stendhal, Proust, his meeting with and interest in translating Pirandello, and the possibility of publishing an anthology of the Scottish poets. Passing references are made to life in the British expatriate colony in Italy and to various individuals including Norman Douglas, Orioli, Vyvyan Holland, D.H. Lawrence and Thomas Seltzer. Mention is also made of “the Sitwell Story,” a satire by Moncrieff published pseudonymously as a Cayme Press Pamphlet in 1926, titled The Strange and Striking Adventures of Four Authors in Search of a Character. Also included are carbons of 2 letters from Chapman to Moncrieff dealing with the publication of the Letters.
